A Moment In Time For @POTUS And The #WhiteHousePressCorps

My Tweet a few minutes ago:

If you’re socialized in #MSM #journalism, like I’ve been for 40 years, last night’s extraordinary @POTUS #DonaldTrump presser was an almost romantic moment–a president under attack, #journalists running from an aborted “nerd prom” to the @WhiteHouse, shaken and a little stirred.

Well, the romance didn’t last long ๐Ÿ™‚

#AmnestyInternational #HumanRights Report In #DonaldTrump #POTUS #POTUS47’s America, Released on #MLKDay #MLKDay2026

FROM AI:

Amnesty International defines human rights as fundamental freedoms and protections inherent to every person, based on dignity, equality, and respect, regardless of background. These rights, outlined in documents like the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), are universal, inalienable, and indivisible, including civil/political rights (life, expression, fair trial) and economic/social/cultural rights (health, education, housing, work).

Key Characteristics:

  • Universal:ย Apply to everyone, everywhere.
  • Inalienable:ย Cannot be taken away.
  • Indivisible & Interdependent:ย All rights are equally important and interconnected; taking one away affects others.ย

Core Examples (from the UDHR):

  • Right to Life, Liberty, & Security:ย Freedom from slavery, torture, and arbitrary arrest.
  • Equality & Non-Discrimination:ย Equality before the law, regardless of race, sex, religion, etc..
  • Fair Trial & Justice:ย Right to a fair hearing and recourse for rights violations.
  • Freedom of Expression & Belief:ย Holding opinions, freedom of thought, religion, and peaceful assembly.
  • Economic & Social Rights:ย Right to education, health, adequate housing, food, and work.
  • Right to Asylum:ย Freedom to seek refuge from persecution.ย

In essence, human rights ensure fair treatment and the ability to make choices about one’s life, forming the basis for a just and dignified existence for all people, protected by international law.

Weekly Column

By Amy Goodman & Denis Moynihan

On Tuesday, President Trump attacked the narrative long taught in US schools and documented in museums, about the abhorrent, centuries-long practice of slavery. He focused on The Smithsonian Institution, the world-renowned center of learning and culture based in Washington, DC.

Trump wrote on his social media platform, โ€œThe Smithsonian is OUT OF CONTROL, where everything discussed is how horrible our Country is, how bad Slavery was.โ€

โ€œHow bad slavery was.โ€ It is simply unbelievable that such a statement could be uttered by a president in 2025. Yes, slavery was bad, President Trump. It was evil and remains a stain on this country. We should never stop talking about it.

Lonnie G. Bunch III is the 14th Secretary of the Smithsonian, overseeing the entire institution. Prior to that, he was the co-founder of the Smithsonianโ€™s internationally renowned National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Democracy Now! interviewed Bunch in February, 2020, just before the pandemic struck. Bunch described the importance of depicting slavery:

โ€œOne of the most important things for me was to talk about the slave tradeโ€ฆI felt that we had to find real remnants of a slave ship,โ€ Bunch said.

โ€œWe found the Sรฃo Josรฉ. It was a ship that left Lisbon in 1794, went all the way to Mozambique and picked up 512 people from the Makua tribe, was on its way back to the New World when it sank off the coast of Cape Town. Half of the people were lost. The other half were rescued and sold the next day.โ€

Bunch recalled Trumpโ€™s visit to the African American Museum in 2017, at the beginning of his first term as president:

โ€œThe first place Donald Trump visited in an official capacity was the museum. I think he was stunned by the stories we told, and there was so much he didnโ€™t know,โ€ Bunch said. โ€œWhat I realized is that if people who didnโ€™t know but had political influence could come through the museum, I could help them understand, hopefully, something that would change the way they did it.โ€

Given Trumpโ€™s new assault on The Smithsonian, it seems his visit to the African-American Museum didnโ€™t have Lonnie Bunchโ€™s hoped-for uplifting impact.

In late March of this year, Trump issued an executive order targeting the museum conplex. The order alleges that โ€œthe Smithsonian Institution has, in recent years, come under the influence of a divisive, race-centered ideology.โ€ The order further creates a committee to review the contents of exhibits for โ€œimproper ideology.โ€

Trump has set the tone, normalizing the rejection of history, of the indescribable horror of slavery in the United States. His loyalists follow suit.

In 2023, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis promoted a revision to the stateโ€™s school curriculum, to include instruction on โ€œhow slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their own personal benefit.โ€ DeSantis defended the offensive guidelines, saying โ€œI think that theyโ€™re probably going to show some of the folks that eventually parlayed, you know, being a blacksmith, into doing things later in life.โ€

Trumpโ€™s Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recently joined a growing Christian Nationalist congregation. The churchโ€™s co-founder, Doug Wilson, has written that slavery โ€œproduced in the South a genuine affection between the races.โ€ Hegseth has ordered that previously removed statues of Confederate officers be put back, and is restoring Confederate names to military installations that had been recently removed.

The National Park Service has announced that the only outdoor statue in Washington, DC honoring a Confederate, Albert Pike, which was removed following the racial justice protests of 2020, will be restored. Pike was a Confederate general and alleged member of the Ku Klux Klan.

And as Trump has successfully defunded public broadcasting, some are advocating that PBS content be replaced with material from the rightwing media company PragerU. In one clip from Prager already being used in 10 states, an animated cartoon Christopher Columbus is shown downplaying slavery:

โ€œBeing taken as a slave is better than being killed, no?โ€

Annette Gordon-Reed, professor of history at Harvard University, president of the Organization of American Historians and Pulitzer award-winning author, said on Democracy Now!, โ€œItโ€™s an attempt to play down or downplay what happened in the United States with slaveryโ€ฆThis is a whitewashing of history.โ€

With Trumpโ€™s all out assault on truth, learning, and the institutions that preserve and curate our collective history, places like The Smithsonian Institution are more important than ever.

โ€œIn the era of Donald Trump,โ€ Bunch concluded in 2020, โ€œthe museum has become a pilgrimage site, a site of resistance, a site of remembering what America could be, and a site to engage new generations to recognize they have an obligation to make a country live up to its stated ideals.โ€

The president and his administration have waged a corrupt, chaotic, and cruel assault on the United States and its people

Byย Tim Dickinson,ย Ryan Bort

April 29, 2025

WASHINGTON, DC - APRIL 15: U.S. President Donald Trump arrives for a presentation ceremony for the Commander-in-Chief Trophy to the U.S. Naval Academy in the East Room of the White House on April 15, 2025 in Washington, DC. The Commander-in-Chief Trophy is awarded to the winner of the American college football series among the teams of the U.S. Military Academy (Army Black Knights), the U.S. Naval Academy (Navy Midshipmen), and the U.S. Air Force Academy (Air Force Falcons). Donald Trumpโ€™s first 100 days have been the most chaotic and consequential in modern political memory. He has wielded the presidency like a king, seeking to bend America (and, far less successfully, the world) to his will. The result has been about what youโ€™d expect from the first convicted felon and twice-impeached insurrectionist to return to the White House: a reckless campaign of overreach and lawlessness that has strained the federal judiciary, the Constitution, and American democracy itself.

Trump has emerged with few legislative accomplishments โ€” the fewest in a presidentโ€™s first 100 days, in fact, since the 1950s. They include a short-term spending bill and a law named for murder victim Laken Riley that strips immigrants of due-process rights โ€” both enabled by Democrats. But as heโ€™s taken a hatchet to the government, empowering Elon Musk, the worldโ€™s richest man and Trumpโ€™s largest political benefactor, to decimate the federal bureaucracy, eliminating entire agencies, slashing and demoralizing others, while hoovering up Americansโ€™ personal data for as yet unclear (but surely not benign) purposes.

Trumpโ€™s 100 days are consequential, but not politically successful. At the 100 day mark heโ€™s the least popular president in some 80 years. His chaotic and nasty style of governance has sent his approvals into the toilet. He now finds himself under water even on his signature issue immigration. Trump has spent the days leading up to the milestone melting down over his polling.

It hasnโ€™t been all bad, though. He did move to get rid of the penny.

Below we survey 100 of the most terrifying, corrupt, and otherwise absurd actions that Trump and his administration have taken since he was inaugurated on Jan. 20.

  1. Stagesย billionaireโ€™s row at his inaugurationย โ€” placing tech CEOs Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, Tim Cook, and other high-dollar donors in front of some of his Cabinet nominees.
  1. Demands anย apologyย from the โ€œRadical Left hard line Trump haterโ€ bishop who implored him to โ€œhave mercy upon the people in our country who are scared nowโ€ during a sermon at the National Cathedral.
  1. Attempts toย repeal birthright citizenship, which is enshrined in the Constitution, by executive order. The move inspires a wave of lawsuits and isย blockedย by several federal judges. The Supreme Court is set to take up the issue in May.
  1. Deports hundreds of immigrants to a notorious prison in El Salvador without due process,ย citingย the Alien Enemies Act, a 1798 law infamously used to justify the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II. The move was madeย in defiance of a judgeโ€™s order.
  1. Calls for a judgeโ€™s impeachment in response to a judgeโ€™s order barring his deportations โ€” earning aย reprimandย from Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts: โ€œImpeachment is not an appropriate response to disagreement concerning a judicial decision.โ€
  1. Admits itย wrongly deportedย Kilmar Abrego Garcia โ€” a Maryland man without a criminal record โ€” due to what it described as an โ€œadministrative error.โ€ The Supreme Court unanimouslyย ordersย the administration to โ€œfacilitateโ€ his return. It is so farย refusing to do so, claiming the high court didnโ€™t say what it said.
  1. Mentions repeatedly how much he would โ€œloveโ€ to illegallyย send American citizensย to prison in El Salvador, even suggesting directly to the nationโ€™s president, Nayib Bukele, that heโ€™d like to rendition โ€œhomegrownโ€ criminals during an Oval Office meeting.
  1. Deports U.S. citizen children. Thoseย removed, along with undocumented parents, include a two-year-old, a four-year-old with metastatic cancer, and a 10-year-old with brain cancer who was stopped on the way to an emergency medical treatment.
  1. Says about the quest for mass deportations: โ€œWe cannot give everyone a trial.โ€
  1. Renames the Gulf of Mexico the โ€œGulf of America.โ€ (Also revives โ€œMount McKinleyโ€ as the name for the great Alaskan mountain, Denali.)ย
Trump and the โ€œGulf of Americaโ€ poster board he has kept on display in the Oval Office, on Feb. 25, 2025 in Washington, D.C.Alex Wong/Getty Images
  1. Ousts the Associated Press from White House briefings over its refusal to call the Gulf of Mexico the โ€œGulf of America.โ€ (The move is laterย ruledย unconstitutional.) The White House subsequentlyย takes controlย of which reporters get access to press briefings, while the Justice Departmentย revokesย Biden-era protections for reporters.
  1. Spends Presidentsโ€™ Day weekend asserting he is allowed to break any law he wants. โ€œHe who saves his Country does not violate any law,โ€ Trump made sure toย postย to both Truth Social and X, driving home the point.
  1. Says heย wouldnโ€™t โ€œ100 percentโ€ agreeย that the U.S. should be governed by laws, not men.ย
  1. Pardons his supporters who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6,ย includingย those who assaulted cops. Stewart Rhodes, the Oath Keepers honcho sentenced to 18 years for seditious conspiracy, and Enrique Tarrio, the Proud Boys leader sentenced to 22 years, were also let off the hook.
  1. Ed Martin, Trumpโ€™s loyalist prosecutor in D.C.,ย firesย the Justice Department lawyers who worked on Jan. 6 cases.
  1. Issues an executive order expandingย police stateย to โ€œunleash high-impact local police forces,โ€ equipped with spare weapons from the military, and guaranteed legal representation if they abuse the citizenry.
  1. Drops federal corruption charges against Eric Adams, while attempting to hold the New York City mayor by the short hairs as โ€œan ever present partner,โ€ under threat of future prosecution.
  1. Burns through fourย IRSย interim commissioners as the administration seeks to gain control over personal taxpayer records to aid its deportation efforts and threatens to revoke tax exempt status of nonprofits Trump opposes.
  1. Thumbs his nose atย constitutional term limitsย by repeatedly discussing a potential 2028 presidential run, as his family business even starts sellingย โ€œTrump 2028โ€ merch.
  1. Blocks the State Department from issuingย passports marked with Xย to Americans who donโ€™t fall on the gender binary.
  1. Attempts toย ban trans soldiersย from the military, implying they are dishonorable. A judge laterย blocksย the order, writing that it was โ€œsoaked in animus.โ€
  1. Arrests a sitting judge in Wisconsin,ย allegedlyย for helping a migrant avoid being detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
  1. Captures andย seeks deportationย of Mahmoud Khalil, aย green card holderย who condemned Israelโ€™s violence toward Gaza at student protests, on the pretext that his presence in the U.S. is harming American foreign policy objectives. (Khalil missed the birth of his child while in custody.)
  1. Threatens toย arrest and imprisonย pro-Gaza participants of โ€œillegal protestsโ€ at American universities, First Amendment be damned.
  1. Detains Rumeysa Ozturk, a student visa holder from Turkey studying at Tufts University,ย without charge, over her publication of a pro-Palestine op-ed.
  1. Sharesย an AI videoย on Truth Social imagining Gaza as a glitzy beach paradise with a lavish โ€œTrump Gazaโ€ hotel. (Trump previously pledged a U.S. takeover of Gaza, insisting:ย โ€œWe will own it.โ€)

  1. Trumpโ€™sย nonsensicalย tariff plan calls for import levies on the Heard and McDonald Islands, an uninhabited Australian territory thatโ€™s home toย penguins, but none for Vladimir Putinโ€™s Russia.ย
  1. Promotes a video on Truth Social about how he is โ€œpurposely crashing the stock market.โ€
  1. Tells Americans that โ€œTHIS IS A GREAT TIME TO BUY!!!โ€ hours before scaling back his tariffs, leading to accusations of market manipulation.
  1. Jacks up the tariff on Chinese goods to well over 100 percent,ย exacerbating a trade warย that appears to have no end.
