  1. Thanks very much for sharing this, Dr. Burroughs. Neal Adams was one hell of an artist, but I’ve been long impressed with his advocacy for his fellow artists. As wonderful as the medium of comics is, the long history of exploitation tended (at least as I understand it) to be buried, at least with the both general readers and fandom. If memory serves, Neal Adams (along with folks like Jerry Robinson) was instrumental in shining a light on the exploitation of Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel when SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE was released in 1978. I think that started to change the perception of fans about how writers and artists have historically been treated by the work-for-hire arrangements the companies forced on them.

Given what’s been happening more recently with Disney* and whatnot, a lot more work needs to be done. I shudder to think what the industry might have looked like in the 70s and 80s if it wasn’t for the work and activism of people like Neal Adams.

    Thanks again for sharing this.
